Before medical insurance as we know it came into being, people had a simple solution for helping one another bear the burden of unexpected expenses, medical or otherwise. Communities sharing similar faith or other points of strong connection all committed to contribute a small amount of money. The accumulated funds transformed a financial burden or loss that was too much for one person or family to bear into a problem that was easily solved when the burden was shared with a larger group of people.
For churches and faith based organizations that are struggling to offer or maintain health insurance for their staff because of ever rising premiums, medical sharing may be a good alternative. Non-profit organizations like Samaritan Ministries and Christian Healthcare Ministries administer medical sharing programs that meet the medical needs of tens of thousands of individuals and families across the country. Costs for medical sharing are typically about 1/3 of traditional health insurance.
